In this section we will explain what some of the main computer terms are and we will also define them for you so that you can get a better understanding of them... 1. CPU- any machine that does three things: accepts inputs, processes it, and produces the results as an output. 2. BIOS -means the same thing as basic input/output system. On computers, it is the software that you need that tests hardware at startup, starts up the operating system, and supports the data to the hardware device. It is stored in the read-only memory (ROM) so that it can be executed when the computer is turned on. 3. Floppy Drive -A device that reads information and writes information to a floppy. 4. Serial Port -An input/output channel that sends and gets information to and from the computer CPU. 5. Parallel Ports -the input/output connector for a parallel interface device. 6. Sound Card - A type of expansion board that allows you to use the playback and recording of sound, such as from a WAV. or a MIDI. file or a music CD-ROM. 7. Power Supply -an electrical device that transforms outlet electricity into lower voltages. 8. Modem- short for modulator/demodulator. A device that allows a computer to transmit information over a telephone line. 9. Video Capture Device- an expansion board that converts video signals into digital and stores them in the computers hard disk or other storage devices. 10. PCI Local Bus -Short for Peripheral Component Interconnect local bus. A local bus system that allows up to 10 PCI-complaint expansion cards to be installed in the computer. | COMPUTER TERMINOLOGY | ||||||||||||||||
